“Godspell” Coming to Sierra Vista Community Theatre
It's probably no surprise that a former theatre kid would find herself behind a mic on the radio. I'm even "theatre" enough to end that word in re rather than the more modern spelling.
It's as ingrained in me as telling someone to "break a leg" before a performance. In The Theatre, good luck is bad luck. If that makes sense to you, you've probably been enchanted by the roar of greasepaint and glow of limelight at some point in your life.
That's why I was pleased to learn the Sierra Vista Community Theatre's first musical of the 2023 season is Godspell. As much as I adore musicals, my poor coordination and lack of singing skills meant no singing or dancing for me - I could either admire from the wings or the from the audience.
Which is where I watched my high school's version of Godspell. Nevertheless, I was enchanted and I'm excited to see how the Sierra Vista Community Theatre delivers this show.
If you're not familiar, Godspell is a Stephen Schwartz musical based on the book by John-Michael Tebelak which was first produced on Broadway in the early 1970s.
The powerful rock opera features a live band. It's based on the Gospel According to Matthew, and specifically covers the final days of Jesus, dramatizing several well-known parables. GuideToMusicalTheatre.com calls the show, "a religious experience, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of the family of man".
The Sierra Vista Community Theatre is presenting the 2012 Revised Version of
Godspell which opens March 31st and runs through April 16th.
Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7pm, with Sunday matinees starting at 3pm.
