Is It Illegal to Pass a Stopped School Bus in Arizona?
It happens to all of us. We're getting ready for work, and we suddenly realize we're short on time.
Some of us try to beat the clock to get to work on time, but if you're not careful, trying to shave off an extra two or three minutes from your commute could end in tragedy. Slow down and make sure everyone stays safe, especially during the school year.
Watch for the Stop Signs on Arizona School Buses
We've all seen them: school buses have those special retractable stop signs, and in Arizona, they're more than just a suggestion.
When the bus stops and the sign is extended, all traffic must come to a complete stop. Traffic should wait for the children to cross the road, and only when the sign has been retracted is it safe to continue. If you don't wait or ignore the stop sign, you could be in for serious consequences.

Is It Legal in Arizona to Pass a School Bus When the Stop Sign is Extended?
In Arizona, passing a school bus is illegal when its stop sign is extended and lights are flashing.
This law is essential to keep kids safe while they're boarding or exiting the bus. But what are the rules?
According to Arizona Revised Statutes 28-857,
When a school bus stops, drivers from both directions must come to a complete halt until the bus resumes motion or the stop sign, and lights are turned off.
The only exception is if you’re on a divided roadway with a physical barrier separating the lanes.
What Are the Penalties in Arizona?
A lot of school buses have cameras these days. If you pass a school bus with the stop sign extended, they may capture your vehicle and license plate with a photo and/or video evidence, and you can incur a hefty penalty.
In Arizona, a first-time offense can result in a minimum fine of $250. Get caught again within 36 months, and the fine increases to $750. Oh, and your driver’s license could be suspended for up to six months.

No one wants to hurt a kid, so obeying this law is crucial. Passing a stopped school bus is extremely dangerous because kids are unpredictable. They often dart across the street without warning.
In the past, children have been injured when drivers ignored the stop sign, attempting to pass a stopped school bus. By following the law, you’re not just avoiding fines—you’re protecting the lives of our kids in Arizona.
