How to Honor Your Pet on Día de Muertos
For many families in the Hispanic culture Dia De Los Muertos is a day where families honor loved ones who’ve passed away with food, flowers, and memories. But did you know our furry friends have their own special day too? October 27 is officially recognized in Mexico as the Día de Muertos for Pets, a day to celebrate the pets who once filled our homes and hearts with unconditional love.
For some people, their pets become more than just a pet to them, they become family. So it is only fair that we honor their memories just like we honor the loved ones in our lives you have passed away.
More and more families are setting up mini ofrendas (altars) for their late pets, complete with all the traditional touches including marigold flowers, candles, water, and a favorite toy or treat.
How To Create Your own Alter For Your Pet:
- Start with a photo or drawing of your pet because they’re the star!
- Add some marigolds (real or paper) to guide them home.
- Include their favorite snacks or treats.
- Toss in a toy or two — because playtime never dies.
