Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunt you do with your phone or GPS. There are Geocaches all around you even as you read this. Geocachers often have local events where two or five or ten Geocachers get together and share stories about Geocaching.

The next step up is a Mega event, and the Yuma Mega Event is coming up February 5th. Along with geocaching, there's going to be fun activities like a banana flash mob, can you hear me now? and other fun activities. On Saturday, the discovery series #9, where you can earn a “Micro in a Rock Pile” geocoin. It all happens in Yuma, Arizona at the West Wetlands Park. There will be food, vendors, a 50/50, swag raffle, trackables exchange, best container contest, door prizes and awards. Then on Monday, everyone gets together for a “South of the Border” lunch.

Geocachers from all over the state, including several of us from Cochise County, head to the Yuma Mega Event every year.

Earning the event coin is a really fun time and my favorite part. You have to get certain Geocaches in the day, keep track of them and answer questions about the Geocache or location, to be able to claim your coin. I have included some of the past coins from the “Yuma Mega Event” in the pictures below. Geocoins are also a trackable. Geocaching trackables can be anything from a dog tag or a collectible coin that travels from Geocache to Geocache around the world. (Some samples of trackables in the pictures below) When someone finds your trackable and logs it or moves it, you get an e-mail telling you where it has ended up. At the Yuma mega event, hundreds of trackables converge are traded and moved along at the trackable exchange. Trackables can also have a mission, for example, you can create a mission for your trackable to end up in England, or to have pictures taken with old cars, or only head West, any kind of mission you would like for your trackable to have you can create.

When Geocachers converge on a local area, they contribute to the economy with hotel rooms, restaurants, and anything else a typical Geocacher might need. We also a lot of sight seeing, I stopped by the Yuma Prison, pictured below.
