Arizona's major sports are a painful experience. With almost no major championships and a constant cycle of hope to crushed dreams, there's not much for Arizona sports fans to root for.

There is one legend here, though, and his name is remembered by every sports fan in America. You already know who...

Who is Pat Tillman?

Tillman was as tough as they come. Starting as a high school football star in San Jose, California, he was soon noticed by Arizona State University, and became a linebacker, helping lead the Sun Devils to an undefeated season and Rose Bowl in 1997, and in 1998, he was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals.

Many were skeptical that Tillman would start, but he blew away expectations, setting the franchise record for most tackles in a season with 224 in 2000. He wasn't just a football player, he was an avid member of his community, and he stepped up once again, enlisting in the military after the 9/11 attacks rocked the nation. On April 22nd, 2004, Tillman's unit was ambushed, and he was killed providing cover for his brothers in arms.

Pat's Run

Pat was immediately recognized as a hero, and an Arizona legend. Now, over 20 years after his heroic sacrifice, the Pat Tillman Foundation seeks to honor his legacy with "Pat's Run". This is a 4.2 mile run, honoring Tillman's number, 42, through the streets of Tempe.

Current Sun Devil's coach, Kenny Dillingham will stand as the official race starter. There couldn't be a better pick, as Dillingham has both brought ASU back to national prominence, and established the Pat Tillman Leadership Council which aims to remember and carry on Pat's leadership in the state of Arizona.
