Winter in Arizona isn't exactly a season, it's more a state of mind. What else do you expect from a state that's almost entirely hot, arid desert?

There are still plenty of destinations in-state for those looking for a white Christmas, from the peaks of Alpine to the forests of Flagstaff. But there's one town in Arizona that never gets its recognition as a hotspot for perfect winter vacations.

Allow me to make my case.

Where to Spend Winter in Arizona

Sure, you can head up north for all the skiing and hot chocolate your heart desires, but for those more acclimatized to the hotter weather, the chill might come as a bit too much. If you need a place that has all the positives of winter without the horrid weather, might I suggest Bisbee.

The small town of about 5,000 people is nestled deep into the Mule Mountains of Cochise County. Initially a major mining center for the state, the population and industry began to dwindle in the early 20th century. Since then, the town's embraced everything wacky, weird, and off-kilter, and become a hippie haven for anyone looking to open their mind.

Will Arizona Be In For an Unbearable Winter?

Why Spend Winter in Bisbee?

Sure, Bisbee's a cool city, but it's like that every time of year. What makes Bisbee's winter special is its climate. Due to it's location in the middle of a mid-sized mountain range, it gets significantly colder and much more snow than much of its southern Arizona brethren.

Luckily, since it's not too high in elevation, the cool and snow are limited, but almost to the exact amount you'd want. Stay for a weekend? You're likely to wake up to a brisk 40 with a bit of snow left on the ground from the day before. By noon, that snow will be melted, and you'll be feeling the slight chill of 60ish degree weather.

If you want all the benefits of going to Alpine of Flagstaff without the unbearable winter cold and a vibrant community, Bisbee's the place to go.
